Lucas Rodrigues (Miami, Fla./Immaculata LaSalle) scored the game-winning goal in the 69th minute to send the Carl Sandburg College men’s soccer team to a 3-2 victory at Malcolm X on Wednesday afternoon in a Region IV matchup.
Rodrigues scored on a penalty kick to give the Chargers (6-5-2, 4-5-2) their third win in the last four games. The PK came after the teams exchanged the first four goals of the game and just minutes after the Hawks (3-6) had tied the contest for the second time.
The Chargers scored just 13 seconds in on Arlen Navarro’s (Miami, Fla./Sports Leadership & Management) goal from Erick Suarez (Monmouth, Ill./Monmouth-Roseville). Malcolm X scored in the 22nd minute, but Sandburg responded shortly after on an unassisted goal from Mohamed Elshafie (Miami, Fla./Immaculata LaSalle) in the 24th minute for a 2-1 lead going into halftime.
The Hawks got the equalizer in the 67th minute before Rodrigues converted his game-winning PK just 2 minutes later.
Felipe Petry (Barao, Brazil/Instituto Estadul de Educacao) and Leonardo Amorim (Sanata Catarina, Brazil/Colegio Catarinese Florianopolis) each spent time in net for Sandburg, with Petry making four saves and Amorim two.
